Our Building & Heritage

The New Testament Church of God, Willenhall Tabernacle, is privileged to worship in a building with deep historical roots in the town.

Located on Upper Lichfield Street in Willenhall, the very first foundational stone of the building was said to be laid on the 19th May, 1862 by Baron Teynham. Most of the construction was financed by him and after eight months of work, the church was completed and ready for occupancy. Initially the building was used as a Baptist Chapel called 'Mount Calvary Church', serving the local community as a place of Christian worship during the height of Willenhall’s 19th century growth. The first congregation moved in on the 20th January, 1863.

The external architectural features of the church consists of a classic pedimented frontage, traditional brickwork, and original design elements typical of non-conformist chapels of that time. Historic records also note the presence of a Sunday School block and internal features such as original galleries, many of which have survived through the years.

In the 1960's the needs of the community changed, church membership began to fall and finding funds to maintain the upkeep of the building became challenging. Subsequently it fell into such disrepair, the Minister and what remained of the congregation, had no choice but to close the church doors.

It was later acquired and established as the home of the New Testament Church of God during the 1970's to present day. The church continues it's long-standing purpose as a place of prayer, worship, fellowship and service to the people of Willenhall.

While the earliest known photographs of the building are held within local archive collections rather than online, its recorded history confirms over 160 years of continuous Christian presence on this site. We are honoured to steward this historic space and to carry forward its legacy into the present and future generations.
